Smaller cheaper notebooks are here. They are called Netbooks. They are also referred to as Mini Notebooks, Subnotebooks or Laptop Netbooks. They are smaller, lighter and cheaper, but they are not short on features. They best way to describe a Netbook is to list their features.

Lets start with price – the one thing that everybody wants to know.

With a little shopping you can break the $300 barrier and find cheap Netbooks in the $280–$290 range. On the high end they are hovering just under $500. This is great news.  Even the highest priced Netbooks are cheaper (price not quality) than a laptop computer. On the low-end they are a little more than a phone.

What are the features of a Netbook?

  • They are small and lightweight.  Approximately 7 inches by 10 inches and weigh in the  2-3 lb range.
  • Video display of 10″ WSVGA with 1024 x600 resolution. (Remember the old 12″ green screens in 1986)
  • Close to full size keyboard with 84 keys, and muti gesture touchpad, bluetooth
  • Built in Camera, Built-in Mic for Video conferencing
  • Wifi, Enternet Jack, USB ports, Multi Memory card reader and external VGA jack.
  • 3-7 hour battery life
  • 1 GB of memory, 160 GB and up of disk space
  • Full windows operating system XP, Windows 7, or Linux

The specification of a Netbook are so similar to a laptop, that it would be easy to confuse one with the other. The main differences being size, weight amd the absence of an optical drive.

Netbooks were originally positions as companion devices. In other words, they were designed  to augment a user’s other computer access. But with these feature this may no longer be the case.

They are the perfect device for access to web-based applications while on the go.  This computing device is perfect for students, road warriors, business persons, personal entertainment, and service people.

A warning, though. Netbooks are not laptop replacements, at least not yet. They do not support Vista or Mac OS X. The processor power is usually the Intel Atom 1.6 GHz, If you are running processor intensive application a Netbook is not for you. They keyboards are small and so are the displays. This is not your workhorse Laptop at one third the price.
